Melasma are black or light brown patches appearing on the forehead, chin, upper cheeks and lips of both males and females aged between 25 to 55 years.

Causes of Melasma

1. Hormonal Melasma – due to high levels of estrogen including the secretion of hormones during pregnancy and from the adrenal gland, the melanocytes in the skin layer abnormally produce melanin and is pushed towards the surface of the skin. The skin colour of an individual begins to change due to the effects of skin pigmentation disorders, causing melasma and the stimulation of skin darkening to appear.

2. Directly or Frequently Exposed to UVA or UVB – an individual’s skin becomes darker in colour due to the increased production in and stimulation of pigment cells in the skin.

3. Cosmetic Application – preservatives, lead, mercury, chemical substances and bleaching cream may increase the cause of melasma. There are substances in cosmetic products that causes the development of skin irritability and allergies to occur after the continuous use in these unnatural applications. Perfume or colour residue in the use of cosmetics can be accumulated underneath the skin and affect the skin colour, creating brown spots, which in turn develops into a melasma.

Treatments and Preventions of Melasma

1. Utilising laser treatment is the most direct method in reducing and removing melanin pigments underneath the layer of skin. Both the pigmentation reduction and removal lasers are utilised to safely diffuse the production of pigmented melanin. It is a significantly effective form of treatment to diminish the appearance of melasma and the results are long-term.  BSL Clinic’s dermatologists have the extensive knowledge in accurately choosing and operating a laser for the treatment of specific skin conditions.

• The following steps involve the treatment of melasma:

Step 1 – Telangiectatic Melasma Removal Laser – skin restoration is undertaken to reduce redness, provide nourishment and strengthen the skin barrier.

Step 2 – Pigmentation Reduction Laser – the treatment specifically targets the production of melasma and produces brighter and clearer looking skin. The surrounding skin is unharmed through this treatment.

Step 3 – Pigmentation Removal Laser – it directly removes the melanin underneath the layers of skin to create a smoother and radiant appearance.

Step 4 – Skin Cell Repair and Skin Barrier Strengthening – through autologous cell therapy innovation utilising stem cells and platelet-rich plasmas to repair damaged skin cells. Undertaking the rejuvenation of skin cells to strengthen the skin barrier and reduce pigmentation, thus producing long-term positive results.

Step 5 – BSL Clinic’s Meso-White – to minimise the production and reduce the extent of black melasma pigment to the outermost layer of the skin.

Step 6 – Skinesia Products by BSL Clinic – a safe product to use long-term to impede the black melasma pigmentation process at all stages.

2. In order to impede melanin production, it is vital to utilise Skinesia products, which are effective in reducing melasma pigmentation. In four steps, the process of skin pigmentation can be eliminated through the following:

Step 1 – Inhibit the activation of melanocyte skin cells.

Step 2 – Reduce the amount of tyrosinase enzyme, which produces melanin.

Step 3 – Prevent the occurrence in activity of the tyrosinase enzyme.

Step 4 – Block the transfer of melanin into the keratinocytes, which is a type of cell located in the epidermis.

3. BSL Clinic refuses to utilise hydroquinone, mercury, steroids or other hazardous substances in conducting their skin treatments. These hazardous substances cause skin redness, sensitivity, the appearance of vitiligo or Exogenous Ochronosis (EO), a skin disorder consisting of dark patches.

4. It is important to apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) and utilise other sun protection applications to protect the skinม prior to participating in outdoor activities or directly being exposed to the sun’s Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Preventing the skin from further harm minimises the development of unwanted skin conditions.

5. Avoid the use of cosmetics including whitening creams containing chemical enhancements, preservatives or mercury substances, which increases the likelihood of developing freckles.

BSL Clinic’s dermatologists utilise safe pigmentation laser technologies to remove the primary cause of melasma, the dark melanin pigments underneath the surface of the skin. Through laser penetration of the skin, pigments are broken down into small granules, resulting in the reduction of black spots.

Autologous Cell Therapy utilises stem cells and platelet-rich plasmas to repair damaged skin cells, caused by melasma. Skin cell rejuvenation helps strengthen the skin barriers and reduce pigmentation. Stimulation of new skin cells results in the reduction of wrinkles, smoother skin tone, and adds volume and hydrates the skin.
